Good to know

Good to know before a desert tour from Marrakech

The route and the stops

Marrakech to Merzouga is about 560 km, and the drive is a large part of the trip. You cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), then follow valleys of mud-brick villages and stony plateaus before the dunes start. The usual stops:

  • Ait Ben Haddou: the fortified earthen village used as a set for many films
  • Ouarzazate: the film studios, with sets you can still walk through
  • Dades Valley: rock formations and old kasbahs
  • Todra Gorge: a narrow canyon with walls about 300 m high
  • Erfoud: fossil workshops with trilobites and ammonites

On a private tour you stay longer where you like and skip the rest.

Camel trek, camp night and food

The camel trek into the dunes is timed for sunset. Camels keep their own slow pace, and after a few minutes the sway is easy to ride with. In camp there is no light pollution, so the Milky Way is clearly visible. Dinner is usually a tagine and bread baked in the sand, often eaten together at low tables.

What it costs

A private 3-day desert tour from Marrakech costs €320 to €599 per person. The lower price is for groups of more than 6, the higher one for 2 people. Every tour page lists exactly what is included. Budget separately for tips for the camp staff, lunches on the road, drinks, and extras such as sandboarding or a quad ride.

When to go

  • March to April, September to November: the most comfortable temperatures, and the busiest months
  • May to June: still pleasant, with fewer travellers
  • July to August: very hot by day, quiet camps
  • December to February: cold nights, the clearest skies for stars

In every season the desert night is much colder than the day, so pack a real warm layer.

Common planning mistakes

  • No warm clothes for the night: desert days are hot, nights can drop close to freezing in winter.
  • Too little water: the air is dry; plan for 3 to 4 litres per person per day.
  • Booking through a middleman: an agent or hotel desk adds a margin; booking with the operator directly costs less for the same tour.

What to wear and pack

Light, long-sleeved clothes for sun and for visits to villages, a warm layer for the evening, comfortable shoes, a hat and sunglasses. Keep phones and cameras in sealed bags against the sand; golden hour on the dunes is short, often about 30 minutes, and a small tripod helps for night-sky photos.

Questions

Desert Tours from Marrakech: FAQ

How far is the Sahara desert from Marrakech?

The nearest dunes (Agafay) are about an hour from Marrakech. The full Sahara experience at Merzouga or Erg Chigaga is a 7–9 hour drive, usually broken up over 2–3 days with stops at the Atlas Mountains and kasbahs along the way.

What's the best tour length from Marrakech?

For a first Sahara trip, 3–4 days is the sweet spot — enough time to properly cross the Atlas and reach real dunes without rushing. Short on time? The 2-day Agafay desert camp is close enough for a quick private escape.

Should I book a private or group tour from Marrakech?

Every tour we run from Marrakech is private — your own driver-guide and vehicle, on your own schedule. No joining a group bus or fixed departure times.

What's included on a Marrakech desert tour?

A private, air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking driver-guide, accommodation for the full route including at least one night in a Sahara desert camp, and an itinerary built around what you actually want to see.

How far in advance should I book?

2–4 months ahead for spring and autumn (March to May, September to November) and the Christmas and New Year weeks gives you the best choice of desert camps. Off-season trips can often be booked with just a few weeks notice.

Do you offer hotel pickup in Marrakech?

Yes — every tour includes pickup and drop-off at your hotel, riad, or Marrakech Menara Airport.

Is it safe to travel to the desert from Marrakech?

Yes — these are well-established routes and our driver-guides know them well. You are never left alone; your guide stays with you for the full trip.

What should I pack for a Marrakech desert tour?

Light layers for the day, a warm layer for the evening (desert nights get cold, even in summer), sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes for the dunes.
