5-Day Luxury Morocco Desert Tour from Marrakech Itinerary

Day-by-day plan of this private tour from Marrakech and back, over 5 days.

Day 1 · Marrakech to the Dades Gorges via Ait Ben Haddou & Skoura, 330 KM | 7–8 Hours with Stops

We pick you up in the morning at your riad or hotel in Marrakech and head into the High Atlas, with photo stops on the way. The road crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass, one of the highest mountain roads in North Africa at over 2,200 metres. You then visit the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nicknamed the "Hollywood of Africa" for the many films shot there.

After Ouarzazate, the "gateway to the desert", the road passes the palm grove and kasbahs of Skoura, then Kelaat M'Gouna in the Valley of Roses. You reach the Dades Gorges in the late afternoon.

Breakfast and dinner included.

Overnight: Dades Paradise, Dades Gorges

Day 2 · Dades Gorges to Merzouga via the Todra Gorge & Erfoud, 270 KM | 5–6 Hours with Stops

After breakfast you drive to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, where limestone cliffs rise to about 300 metres on both sides of a narrow canyon. You walk through the gorge and the palm grove, and stop in Berber villages along the way.

In the afternoon you continue east through Tinjdad, Erfoud and Rissani to Merzouga, on the edge of the Sahara. You check in at the luxury camp at the foot of the big Erg Chebbi dunes, then have dinner with Berber music around the fire under the stars.

Breakfast and dinner included.

Overnight: Sakura Luxury Camp, Erg Chebbi

Day 3 · A Full Day Around Merzouga & Khamlia, Minimal Driving

Wake up early for the sunrise over the dunes, then take your time over breakfast at the camp. You visit a nomad family to share tea and see how they live, then go to the Gnawa music centre in Khamlia, where musicians keep up a tradition that came from sub-Saharan Africa. Lunch is Berber pizza (madfouna), the region's best-known dish.

Late in the afternoon you ride a camel into the dunes and try sandboarding, while the desert turns from gold to deep red at sunset. Dinner and a second night at the camp follow.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Overnight: Sakura Luxury Camp, Erg Chebbi

Day 4 · Merzouga to Agdz via Rissani & N'Kob, 370 KM | 6–7 Hours with Stops

After breakfast you head west through Rissani, Alnif and Tazzarine, across the bare rock of Jbel Saghro, to the village of N'Kob and its many kasbahs. Next comes the Draa Valley, one of the longest palm groves in Morocco, lined with earthen ksour and gardens.

You check in at Agdz, with the end of the day free to enjoy the kasbah.

Breakfast and dinner included.

Overnight: Kasbah Kissane, Agdz

Day 5 · Agdz to Marrakech via Ouarzazate & the Tizi n'Tichka, 270 KM | 5–6 Hours with Stops

After breakfast the road climbs the Tifernine pass to Ouarzazate, then crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka, with photo stops and a quick lunch on the way. You reach Marrakech in the late afternoon and we drop you at your riad or hotel.

Breakfast included.

5-Day Luxury Morocco Desert Tour from Marrakech FAQ

Is this a private tour or a group tour?

It is a private tour. Only your own party travels in the vehicle with your driver-guide, there are no fixed departure dates, and no other travelers join along the way.

How long is this tour, and where does it start and end?

It takes 5 days and 4 nights. We pick you up at your hotel or riad in Marrakech on day 1 and drop you back at your hotel or riad in Marrakech in the late afternoon of day 5.

How much does this tour cost?

The price is per person and depends on the size of your group: EUR 690 for 1 or 2 people, EUR 621 for 3 or 4, EUR 587 for 5 or 6, and EUR 566 for 7 or more. A solo traveller pays the 2-person price and children count as full travellers. A 30% deposit confirms the booking; send us your dates and we confirm within 24 hours.

How do I pay the deposit and the balance?

A 30% deposit confirms your booking, payable by card or PayPal. You pay the balance in cash on the first day of the tour.

What makes this a luxury desert tour?

You spend two of the four nights at Sakura Luxury Camp, at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes, and one night at Kasbah Kissane, a traditional kasbah in Agdz. You also have your own air-conditioned vehicle and Berber driver-guide for all five days, and you can stop whenever you want.

Why does this tour go to Erg Chebbi and not Erg Chigaga?

The road to Erg Chebbi passes the Dades Gorges, the Valley of Roses and the Todra Gorge, and you come back through the Draa Valley. You also stay two nights at the same camp, with a full day of activities. Erg Chigaga's main draw is the 60 km track to the dunes.

How long are the drives each day?

Day 1 is about 330 km (7 to 8 hours with stops), day 2 about 270 km (5 to 6 hours), day 3 has very little driving, day 4 about 370 km (6 to 7 hours) and day 5 about 270 km (5 to 6 hours).

What should I pack for the desert?

Days are usually sunny, but nights in the desert and the mountains can be cool. Bring warm clothes, closed shoes, sunglasses and sun cream.

How fit do I need to be for this tour?

Most of the time is spent in the vehicle, with short walks in kasbahs, gorges and villages. The camel ride lasts about 1 to 2 hours, and other options are possible on request.

Can the itinerary be changed?

Yes. You can adapt the programme to your pace, for example by adding a night or changing a stop. We confirm any change and its price in writing before you book.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancel more than 50 days before departure and you get a full refund. Later cancellations and no-shows are not refunded. The full booking terms are on our Terms and Conditions page.

Why We Recommend Erg Chebbi over Erg Chigaga

For five days from Marrakech, we recommend Erg Chebbi. The road has more to see, and you get two nights at one camp with a full day of activities.

Erg Chebbi (this tour)Erg Chigaga
Nights in the dunes2, at the same camp1
Full day in the desertYesNo, few activities on site
On the roadDades Gorges, Valley of Roses, Todra Gorge, Draa ValleyMainly the Draa Valley
Main drawThe fullest and most restful tripThe 60 km track to the dunes

The track to Erg Chigaga is its big draw, but you reach the camp tired, and there is not enough to do there to stay a second night and rest. If you want a lower price, Erg Chigaga is still a good choice: our 5-day tour to Erg Chigaga costs less and uses simpler desert camps.

How This Tour Compares with Our 3-Day and 4-Day Luxury Tours

All three go to a luxury camp at Erg Chebbi. The extra days change how much time you get in the dunes and how long you spend driving on any one day.

TourNights at the campFull day in the desertLongest day on the road
3-day luxury tour1No560 km
4-day luxury tour1No330 km
This 5-day luxury tour2Yes370 km

The 4-day tour follows nearly the same road as this one, without the second night at the camp. The 3-day tour suits a short stay in Morocco, but it ends with a 560 km drive back to Marrakech in one day.
