Marrakesh To Desert Tour

Marrakesh to Desert Tour: Erg Chebbi or Erg Chegaga, With a Night in a Luxury Camp Marrakesh itself is a busy, history-heavy city with markets that spill into every alley, but a lot of travelers come for what’s beyond it. A Marrakech to desert tour trades the city for the drive south into the Sahara. The trip usually ends with a night in a desert camp, tents set up for comfort rather than survival, under a sky with no city lights to compete with. The Journey from Marrakesh to the Desert The drive out of Marrakesh crosses the Atlas Mountains before dropping into the Draa Valley, one of the longest river valleys in the country, and on into the Sahara. Along the way there are stops in Berber villages, where mint tea usually comes before conversation. The scenery changes constantly: mountain passes, palm groves, old kasbahs, and eventually the dunes themselves. A Night in a Luxury Desert Camp Arriving in the Sahara means checking into a desert camp built around Berber design, with the amenities most people don’t expect to find this far from a town. Accommodation and Amenities The tents are spacious and furnished with traditional Moroccan textiles, and despite being surrounded by sand, they come with real beds, private bathrooms, and in some camps, air conditioning. Activities and Entertainment There’s plenty to do beyond sitting still. A camel ride across the dunes at sunset follows routes caravans have used for centuries, and travelers who’d rather cover more ground can explore by 4×4 instead. In the evening, the camp usually gathers around a fire while Berber musicians play, followed by a Moroccan dinner under the stars. The Sahara at Night A night in a desert camp is worth building the trip around on its own. Away from any town, the sky fills with far more stars than most travelers are used to seeing, and the silence of the dunes is hard to find anywhere else. As you set out on your trip from Marrakesh to the desert, the drive itself, through mountains, valleys, and villages, is as much a part of the trip as the dunes at the end of it.
