Is the desert tent private, and does it have its own shower?

Yes. Luxury Sakura Camp uses private en-suite tents with a proper bed, a private bathroom and a hot shower – it is not a shared or basic camp.

What happens to my luggage during the camel ride into the desert?

Your main luggage is driven directly to the camp by support vehicle while you ride, so you only need to carry a small day bag with essentials on the camel.

What is the best time of year for this tour?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the most comfortable temperatures for both the cities and the desert. Summer can be very hot in the Sahara during the day, while winter nights in the desert and the High Atlas are cold, so warm layers are recommended.

What type of vehicle is used?

Depending on your group size, you will travel in a private, air-conditioned SUV or minivan with a licensed local driver-guide.

Day-by-Day Itinerary: 10 Days from Tangier to Marrakech

   Day 1: Arrival in Tangier – Transfer to Chefchaouen

   Your driver-guide meets you in Tangier and you set off south into the Rif Mountains toward Chefchaouen. The road climbs through pine-covered hills before dropping into the valley where Morocco’s famous blue-washed old town sits. Settle into your riad and spend the evening wandering the first blue alleyways at your own pace. Overnight in Chefchaouen at Casa Hassan or Riad Soultan.

   Day 2: Chefchaouen – Morocco’s Blue Pearl

   A full day to explore Chefchaouen properly. Wander the Kasbah museum and gardens, walk down to the Ras El Maa spring where locals wash wool and laundry, and browse the small shops selling wool blankets and local crafts. Late in the afternoon, hike up to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint above town for a panorama over the blue medina as the light turns gold. Overnight in Chefchaouen at Casa Hassan or Riad Soultan.

   Day 3: Chefchaouen to Fes via Volubilis & Meknes

   Leave the mountains behind and head toward the imperial cities. Stop at Volubilis, a UNESCO-listed Roman archaeological site with well-preserved mosaics and columns set among olive groves, then continue to Meknes for a short visit to the monumental Bab Mansour gate and the old imperial quarter. Arrive in Fes in the late afternoon and check into your riad in the medina. Overnight in Fes at Riad Dar Borj Fes.

   Day 4: Guided Discovery of Fes

   Spend the day exploring Fes el Bali, the oldest car-free urban center in the world. A local guide leads you through the maze of the medina to the Al Quaraouiyine Mosque and University exterior, the ornate Bou Inania Madrasa, the tanneries, and the metalworkers’ and potters’ quarters. The afternoon is free to shop in the souks or simply get pleasantly lost in the alleys. Overnight in Fes at Riad Dar Borj Fes.

   Day 5: Fes to Merzouga via Ifrane, Azrou & the Ziz Valley

   Drive south through the Middle Atlas, stopping in Ifrane – often nicknamed “the Switzerland of Morocco” for its alpine-style architecture – and the cedar forests around Azrou, home to wild Barbary macaques. Continue through Midelt and down into the palm-lined Ziz Valley before reaching Merzouga in the late afternoon. As the sun sets, mount your camel for a trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes to the desert camp, where dinner and Berber music around the fire await. Overnight in the Sahara Desert at Luxury Sakura Camp.

   Day 6: Sunrise in the Sahara & a Free Day in Merzouga

   Wake before dawn for sunrise over the dunes, then ride back to the edge of the desert by camel or 4x4. The rest of the day is left free – relax at the camp, or add an optional excursion such as quad biking on the dunes or a visit to the Gnawa music village of Khamlia. In the evening you return to the camp for a second night in the desert. Overnight in the Sahara Desert at Luxury Sakura Camp.

   Day 7: Merzouga to Dades Valley via Todra Gorge

   Head west through Rissani, once the region’s trading capital, then on to Tinghir, gateway to the Todra Gorge. Walk beneath its towering 300-metre rock walls before continuing into the Dades Valley, known as the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs for the earthen fortresses that line the road. Overnight in the Dades Valley at Dades Paradise.

   Day 8: Dades Valley to Marrakech via Skoura, Ouarzazate & Ait Ben Haddou

   Drive through the Rose Valley and the palm groves and kasbahs of Skoura, then reach Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa” for its film studios, and visit the Taourirt Kasbah. Next comes Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco’s best-preserved fortified ksar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From there, cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m) before descending into Marrakech. Overnight in Marrakech at Riad Les Remparts de la Kasbah or Riad Irhalen.

   Day 9: Guided Tour of Marrakech

   A full day discovering the Red City with a local guide: the lively Jemaa el-Fna square, the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace, and the Saadian Tombs. Spend the afternoon browsing the souks of the medina for spices, leather and lanterns, then return to Jemaa el-Fna in the evening as the food stalls and performers take over the square. Overnight in Marrakech at Riad Les Remparts de la Kasbah or Riad Irhalen.

    The sunset camel trek from the edge of Erg Chebbi to Luxury Sakura Camp takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the exact camp location. If you would prefer not to ride, a 4x4 transfer directly to the camp can be arranged instead.
